Most of them have evolved over years of use by clients, and have gone through many rewrites and updates. Tools for Organizations even has a "Test Drive" website where you can log in, and try out all of the administrative features on a real site. We've tried leaving the site admin totally unlocked so that the general public can log in and give it a try without having to ask for login information, but unfortunately every time we try this, some mischevious internet elves log in and delete all the information or post inappropriate things.
